Eph 2:1-3 – ¹Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. ²You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. ³All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.

1] BONDAGE TO SIN

You were dead because of your disobedience and many sins. You used to live in sin…following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature

Rom 6:16-22 – ¹⁶You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God… ¹⁷Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin…¹⁸Now you are free from your slavery to sin… ²⁰When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the obligation to do right… ²²But now you are free from the power of sin…

Rom 7:18-24 – I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway… when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. …This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?

2] CHAINED TO EVIL

Obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God [Eph 2:2]

John 8:44 – For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.

3] DOOMED TO DEATH

Rom 6:20-21 – When you were slaves to sin…you used to do, things that end in eternal doom

Luke 12:4-5 – Dear friends, don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot do any more to you after that. But I’ll tell you whom to fear. Fear God, who has the power to kill you and then throw you into hell…

Hell is…

…fiery furnace [Matt 13:50]

…outer darkness…weeping & gnashing of teeth [Matt 25:30]

…the second death, the lake of fire [Rev 20:14]

…where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched [Mark 9:48]

…eternal punishment [Matt 25:46]

The smoke of their torment will rise forever and ever, and they will have no relief day or night [Revelation 14:11]

Heb 9:27 – Each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment…
